Business strategy

Building the capacity
to grow.

Growth creates opportunities. It also places new demands on the way a business is managed.

A strong product, favorable market, or capable founder can drive growth. As the business becomes more complex, it also needs the structure to support that growth.

Volume changes the management challenge

More customers, people, and transactions create more decisions and more handoffs. Processes that once worked through informal conversations can become difficult to coordinate. Leaders may spend increasing amounts of time resolving exceptions.

Delays, rework, inconsistent information, and dependence on a few key people can be signs that the operating model needs attention.

Look at the capacity behind the growth

Management capacity includes the ability to set priorities, assign responsibility, understand performance, and act on what the information shows. Useful questions include:

  • Do teams understand the current priorities and the choices behind them?
  • Is responsibility clear where work crosses departments?
  • Can leaders rely on the information used to make decisions?
  • Are recurring issues addressed at their source?
  • Can the operation function without every decision returning to the founder?

Build foundations that fit the business

Clear direction, practical processes, reliable information, and regular management reviews give people a shared basis for action. The structure should be proportionate to the business and easy enough to use consistently.

Documenting important decisions, clarifying ownership, and reviewing a focused set of indicators can make the work more visible. That visibility gives leaders a better basis for deciding where to intervene and what to improve.

Make improvement part of the operating rhythm

As the business changes, its management practices need to develop. Review what is working, identify where the team is relying on workarounds, and adjust the structure deliberately.

The aim is to build an organization with the capacity to carry its ambitions forward.
